Ten Tips to Prevent Fraud Who you are is made up of many personal details, accounts and patterns. When an identity thief looks at you, though, all they are hoping to see is holes. Any gaps in your watchfulness and they may try to strike. Unfortunately, it’s a costly, time-consuming process to restore your identity, your credit and your finances. So, TruWest wants to share these tips to help ensure you don’t become a victim of fraud: 1. Shred documents with personal information to keep them from falling into the wrong hands. 2. Do not store your PIN with your ATM, debit or credit cards. 3. Never give out personal details over the phone, unless you initiated the call 4. If it sounds too good to be true, it is probably fraud. 5. If your wallet is stolen, call your financial institutions immediately. 6. Do not leave your cards or driver’s license in plain sight on your desk or in your car. 7. Be suspicious of lottery, contest or other sweepstakes notifications you did not initiate. 8. When selling something, only accept checks for the exact amount from known financial institutions and wait for the funds to clear before releasing your property. 9. Do not fall for get-rich schemes, inheritance notifications or pleas from other countries. 10. Never use your Social Security number in an ID, statement, email or login. Be cautious, be logical and be proactive about ensuring your identity remains safe! 8
